Pink and Green BSJ - Flopped

I don’t like it. It actually looks a little better than this photo, and weaving in the yarn ends and mild blocking would probably help some - but I should have just made a small version of the ASJ - since nobody I know that is this size wears a diaper and needs that nice rounded area for a hiney to fit into.

Things I like about it: I like where the striping landed. I love the 3 2-stitch bind-off buttonholes (for this yarn) that would accommodate nice big buttons up at the top, I like the contrast bind off - opted for that rather than an I-cord since the yarn is so bulky. So, I’ll be unraveling all that garterstitch and re-skeining the yarn. It may or may not end up as an ASJ (small). I might just make the girls some cute felted hats from this yarn. It was a fun knit and I think I’m ready to get back to my peacock shawl now.

Knit on!

The Green and Pink BSJ progress

I’m calling this “75%” done - because I’m on the part where you knit 10 ridges - about halfway through that - and there’s still all that I-cord to knit after it’s all finished.

This yarn is really not “baby” size yarn, so this BSJ is coming out quite a bit bigger than the two I have knit before, and I’m really loving that! I’m hoping it will fit one of my granddaughters, neither of whom are “baby” size any longer - by a long shot. If not - well, it’s still a fun thing to knit this batch of handspun into, and nice to have in the stash for gift-giving when the occasion arises.

This time, along with the Opinionated Knitter, I’m using Dawn Adcock’s notes (which I refer to as my “cheat sheet”) on making the BSJ. I don’t remember how I stumbled across them, but they have sure come in handy this time as kind of a way to keep track of where I am.

Baby Surprise Jacket

“B” could also be for “BSJ” too, now, couldn’t it? This one is a most pleasant knit. Of course, I’m off in my counts for the decreases, but it’s only by a stitch or two, so I’m just shrugging and continuing… It’s coming out as likely the largest one I’ve made yet. I guess my “worsted” weight yarn, is actually knitting up kind of chunky. Gauge seems to be consistently somewhere between 3-1/2 to 4 st per inch. I’m actually kind of pleasantly surprised by that because I might just have a recipient for it if it comes out big enough. I am hoping I have enough yarn for the project. I “think” I might - but if not, well, I guess there’s always the option of ripping it out and re-purposing the yarn. It’d make a nice hat and/or scarf. Meanwhile, it’s a great thing to knit during an exciting movie, or a playoff game on TV. And..that’s probably why I messed up on the decreases. I was glued to a good movie while I was knitting it the other night. The pattern can be found in Elizabeth Zimmermann’s book “Opinionated Knitter”, or as a single sheet, or a kit from her daughter Meg Swansen at SchoolhousePress.com.

B is for Bread

Whole wheat oat bread. First loaf of the “season.”

Dyepot results

The pinks and greens were the first results from two batches of dye that I mixed up using my highly scientific method of a scoop of this to three scoops of that in a Mayo jar with water. Then, half of that jar into the dyepot and a couple of glugs…or so…of vinegar. The green had more yarn in the pot (and possibly more water) than did the mauve - which was supposed to be plum, but I like this color better….

The dark purple sort of variegated fingering weight skein in the front, is the result of overdyeing one of the green skeins with some of the plum leftover in the Mayo jar and using the crock pot. No water in the crock pot to dilute the color. Just some vinegar, the skein of yarn and the dye. I really like the result, although I don’t know if there’s enough here for a project of any substance. I’m leaning heavily towards maybe a Baby Surprise Jacket with the green/pink yarns, and - I’m wondering - if I could then use the purple fingering weight for an attached I-cord. Hmmm….there’s probably enough for that.

The yarn, which is made of corriedale blended with angora bunny, varies in thickness so I think the garter stitch construction of the BSJ will lend itself best to that little issue….or ???
