Progress Report

The socks have morphed into their 3rd incarnation now. I think I have finally settled on a pattern and an approach that is working for me.

I tore out the first toe, and re-knit it. It was more narrow, and balanced, but I wasn’t sure I liked it as “pointy” as it was looking. I was OK with it…since my mom has narrow feet, I figured it’d probably be fine, so I knit on…until disaster struck on my next pattern.

I had decided to try the Chevron pattern in Sensational Knitted Socks. There were no K3tog’s in it, and things were going along swimmingly, until I noticed the pattern repeats were not balanced over the number of stitches I was using. The pattern was forming with an purl row on one side, and a knit row on the opposite side. So, I ripped that one back and was going to modify things a bit to get the chevrons more centered - but that toe was still sitting there mocking me.

So, out it came and instead I decided to cast on for a cuff. Cuffs. Comfortable. Familair. Do-able. Gives you time to decide on things like toe shaping and the kind of heel you want to use later.

I’m learning as I go along that, while I like trying new techniques, and plan to continue doing that, if it doesn’t work for me - I will go back to something that does.

In this case, I chose a 1 x 1 rib for the cuff…I will admit that I should have chosen a size smaller needles to execute said 1 x 1 rib, but it’s fine. I like it, and we’re going with a THIRD pattern choice in Sensational Knitted Socks. This one is called Little Shell Rib. It’s a clever little pattern, and has the stretch of a ribbing pattern, but forms lacy little “shells” with the fast decrease/increase that gets executed over a couple of rows. Easy to remember. Easy to keep track of which row you’re on if you set it down and come back to it later without making notes. My kind of pattern.

The ladybug sweater has been in a short time-out this weekend. We’ve been on the go quite a bit, and car-knitting is usually a sock. I had to pull out a few rows of the Ladybug sweater last week so it’s not quite as far along in progress as I thought I was going to be. It was to the second set of ladybugs when I noticed I’d read/translated the chart wrong. So, it got pulled out back to the stripe that divides the sections. I just love this pattern. I’m a little bit surprised at how much I like the colors I’m using too. They’re not even anything I’d have been naturally drawn to - well, except the red and the black and the purple, but they’re perfect for this sweater.
