Communication’s Power
It’s been a fascinating week or two in Blogistan. I marvel at the Knit Blogger community’s “power.” Recently, Wendy mused aloud on her web log that she thought she’d confine her yarn choices to the apparently sizeable stash she already owns for the first four months of 2007. This caused a whip-lash effect, and worries by some Local Yarn Store owners who also read the Internet Blogs, that they’d be going under now, because everyone would be following Wendy’s lead and knitting only from yarn stores they already own. [That's "stores" as in stashes, yarn "stored" in their homes already - not that they actually OWN their own yarn store...although I think that to be a fabulous notion.] Really! They did worry like that!
There was also, as a result of “Blog Power” and the holiday season, a tremendous outpouring of charity contributions to Wendy’s favorite charity, Heifer International, Stephanie’s Médecins Sans Frontières, and the Red Scarf Project to name three.
The Knit Blogger Community’s support for Blue Moon Fiberarts with their banking fiasco has been pretty phenomenal. Over 500 commenters, many of whom were wanting to bring retribution upon the bank. Wow. Sort of a virtual lynch-mob!
So, once again, communication’s ability to motivate is demonstrated. Nothing we didn’t already know, I guess. It’s just inspiring to see it in action occasionally, and it is a pretty good example of why that method of our ministry is:
- The same one used by Jesus [Matt 4:23].
- Commanded by Jesus [Matt 28:19-20] to his followers as the main way of getting the word out.
Take the initiative, to go to people with your message. Let them see it for themselves, and then allow them to respond in whatever way they feel appropriate. The Truth appeals to the hearts of fair-minded ones. Our hearts then motivate us to action. Amazing how that works. Even in cyberspace.
