"Do not give what is holy to dogs…

…nor throw pearls before swine.”

Granted, Jesus was illustrating the importance of valuing spiritual things with this illustration at Matthew 7:6. But, with all due respect, I have often thought of many of Jesus’ illustrations when dealing with my canine critters, as well as farm animals. The more you are around them [i.e. dogs, sheep, etc.], the more appropriate these illustrations become when you see the actual traits of your beloved pets and farm animals.

We humans - OK…us “DOG PEOPLE” (and this also applies to “cat people”) tend to forget that we are, indeed, cohabitating with, well…animals. We attribute human traits to our fur babies, and often forget that they are occasionally less than dignified in their habits and/or preferences.

I have always spent the time/money to assure that my sweet Daisy is fed top-grade food. No corn. No preservatives. Human grade. No “by-products.” And yet, despite my scrupulous attention to detail to assure her the best of canine health…one of the first places she’d check when we had the little farm, was to see… if perchance, I had left the chicken feed open and available to her to snack on - CORN!

Today on our walk she caught a scent trail out by our front yard. So, I let her “track’ whatever it was that she’d found. I figured it was a deer from last night because my 8 foot tall rose bush had all of the rose-hips pruned off the lowest level this morning. Knowing how much my sheep liked rose-hips, I figured we’d had deer visitors in the night.

So, anyway…back to our scent trail. We followed it through the loose leaves, and then stopped abruptly as though she’d found the X that marked the spot. Ever so gently she pulled the leaves away with a paw.

Then, gulp! Ahhhhhh……

CAT POOP!!!!

Dogs are so gross.

And so my rule has always been: No Kissing on the LIPS!
