Barbie Hunting

Yesterday my power was turned off for the entire day, so I couldn’t work. This seemed like a great excuse to go THRIFT STORE shopping! So, my friend Wendy and I set out on a pilgrimage to rescue abandoned Ken & Barbies in a couple of the local thrift stores - and perhaps Toys R Us or WalMart. (These wee folk have been dressed for their photo shoot, but are still in the “unprocessed” state. They all need baths and hair styling. Oh yes, we also found another horse or two - which are also in line for bathing.)

Lady E and Sock #2 - opportunistic photo-shoot-hams that they are - are seen here in their almost finished state. Lady E is just waiting for her fringe and then she IS done. Sock #2 is around the heel and onto the foot part now. We’ll wait for their final glossies after they’re both across the finish line.

No knitting got accomplished during the Barbie hunt - usually I knit while riding in the car, but there was too much to gab about with a friend along. (Michael was such a good sport, volunteering to chauffeur us around.) I did check for yarn and needles at the thrift stores. Mostly everyone’s abandoned acrylic yellow, gold and orange yarns (ewe gross!) were waiting patiently for adoption. I left them there for some crafty person to find.

So, how much does a couple of bags of Barbies at the thrift store cost - you may be wondering? (Of COURSE you were…Weren’t you???) One bag of about four naked Barbies was 99 cents, and another bag was 1.99 - not sure why. The other thrift store had them bagged separately and they were about 79 to 99 cents apiece. Actually, some had clothes too, but most were unclad. So, I think I spent about $5 in Barbies (traded a couple to Wendy for a Ken).

After we’d exhausted all of the Thrift Store possibilities (found some great clothes for us there too - Michael even found a nice suit jacket for $5) we swung by the Local Yarn Store where they even had a beautiful red-head Barbie in the display window wearing a lavender knitted dress that had been trimmed with a fun fur. I rarely get an opportunity to go there - in fact had only been the one time before to purchase my Denise Needles set. What a nice experience feeling all the fiber and getting ideas for new projects. I didn’t bring anything home from them yesterday though - had already blown the budget on Barbie Rescue. So, the virtual yarn shopping was fine - and we decided we (well I) need to get some Barbie dresses knitted up - Wendy doesn’t knit [yet!], but she keeps me supplied in old west style dresses for the Barbies that she gets from a lady who loves to sew them, so this would be a fun addition to the wardrobes.

Michael, as I said before, makes a great chauffeur - and while he was waiting on the Barbie Hunters, he was able to go get new tires on the van. He was also doing business on the phone all day so he WAS busy too… and this way we could take him to lunch at his favorite hamburger joint.

Got home and picked up the mail and my new SpinOff magazine was waiting for me! Fabulous finish to a very enjoyable day, I might add!

The power is back on now - so it’s back to the regularly scheduled programming of work. I need to generate funds for future Barbie rescues and stash enhancement excursions…be they “virtual” or otherwise.
