Fledgling sock knitter…

Well, I think I’m becoming hooked on making socks too. Like dishcloths they’re a portable project, and, well…my feet don’t mind mistakes. I do hope to improve in my skills, but what a fun way to learn to knit. Making practical items that can still be used, despite their humble craftsmanship! I recently found an online yarn store (one of MANY) that was selling a sock yarn for a good price. This yarn is called “Sock it To Me” and is a blend of mostly wool with a little nylon in it for stretch. As you knit with it, the yarn stripes itself in sort of a fair-isle patterning. I wanted to try Cat Bordhi’s method of knitting socks on circular needles (since when I made my first pair of socks I kept thinking there MUST be a way to do this on circulars…well…yes, and it’s been published online and in Cat’s book - so of course I bought the book from Amazon.com). So this was my yarn of choice. I started them out on Susan Bates brand circs - because they were so much cheaper than Addi Turbos. Well, the SB’s do the job, but the Addis make the job WAY easier and fun. There’s almost no drag on the ATs as you slide the needles back and forth thru the stitches. BTW - this front sock really isn’t way BIGGER than the back sock. Probably a little bit, but it’s really pretty close in size. They’re both big. They’d probably fit Michael, but I’m not sure he’d wear them, so I’m keeping them. They’re done in a rib knit, so they will accommodate a pretty good size-range. Next socks on the needles with a blue-denim yarn of this same brand are called “Jaywalkers” and I’m blindly following Cat’s instructions on how to adapt a DPN pattern to 2 circs. Will post the results here, of course.

Another dishcloth…

Well, the nice thing about knitting for toddlers, Barbies or the house is…the mistakes are just fine! Nobody cares if it came out as a masterpiece. This is a neat pattern….once I finally figured it out. Think I’d gotten to just about the last third when it finally clicked in my head. But HEY! it’s a dishcloth…it’s not like your sink is gonna notice, right? I may try this one again…but I’ve got a lot of others that I want to do too, so might just file the pattern away for a future project, like a poncho or a sweater - for Barbie or one of the kids! :-)

Dishwashing fun!

Three of the dozen or so I’ve made so far. Recently found a BUNCH of new patterns, and am currently doing a mystery cloth in a Knit-Along with the yahoogroups monthlydishcloths listserv. Seems silly getting so excited over some cotton and a couple of knitting needles, doesn’t it? I’m finding it very relaxing. Nice to have something to do while waiting anywhere. Today on a conference call for work I knitted up 15 rows. Gotta love working at home - Uniform: PJs. Conference call: Speaker phone + knitting project = time flies!

Fiber fumbling and other fun things…

I’ve been meaning to get started on a blog for some time. So, here’s the first attempt. Winter here in the foothills has been a mild one this year, and while cold/wet weather projects have been calling, we’ve really had a LOT more outside weather than I’d care to admit. Guess it doesn’t stop me though!

I have apparently shifted my fiber interests this year to knitting. Scarves galore, I’m almost finished knitting my second pair of socks, made numerous dishcloths just because they’re such a fun take-along project, and quite frankly they’re as addicting as chocolate…or popcorn or something. I believe more of my family members and friends are about to become gifted with quite a few, since I’ve made a lot more than I can use, and there’s no end in sight because I keep finding such cool patterns to try! I have a beautiful shawl on the needles - although this pattern is challenging me, and it may not progress as fast as I’m hoping.

A couple things got sewn this year too…flannel jammies for my sweet granddaughters, a fleece cape for me since I don’t have a winter coat and really needed something to keep the rain off and the occasional cold out. Curtains for my mom…and a few Barbie things. Pictures you say? Soon. I’ve got photos of some of the projects, and will add them ASAP.
